Character Name: Roland

Background: Wiki link here! Note that while it's missing the middle portion of the game, it covers pretty much all the important Roland moments in the game, as he spends much of it bouncing off of Angela and informing her about how the City operates.

Suitability: Roland is immediately going to be suspicious of anything called a "Singularity," considering that it shares a name with some of the most mysterious and often terrifying technologies created by the various mega-corps within The City.

His previous work as a Fixer also makes him an excellent weapon either for or against any of the factions, whether it's due to his capability in battle or his ability to blend into a crowd and act as either a source of information or an assassin.


Powers:

Augmentation
In order to better work as a Fixer, Roland has gone through several augmentations in order to increase his body's natural abilities. As such he has much greater strength, agility, and durability than the average human (for example, in the Distortion Detective, a high-rank Fixer is capable of jumping roughly 7 stories, and in Library of Ruina, it's not too uncommon for many Fixers to be able to deflect or dodge bullets, though guns themselves tend not to be used often due to the high price of ammo).


Gloves of the Black Silence
A memento of his wife, these gloves allow Roland the ability to store and recall a variety of weapons at will. Said weapons include: a clawed gauntlet, a club and axe, a hammer, a katana, a dagger, a spear, a pair of swords, a pair of pistols, a large club/greatsword-looking weapon, and a sniper rifle. There's also a greatsword within, Durandal, which was his sole weapon before Angelica's death.

In addition to the weapon storage and recall, the gloves are also capable of dampening all sound in the immediate area save for the strike of Roland's weapons.


Perception-Blocking Mask
A black, featureless mask that blurs an individual's presence in a crowd when worn. Makes the wearer seem like some random passerby.



PERSONALITY QUESTIONS


Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

While the loss of Angelica may have been the most important moment for Roland in the story of Library of Ruina, I would say the most defining event in Roland's life would be his participation in the Smoke War. It was during that time that he was guided to one of the beings responsible for The City's prosperity, a monster so terrible that even after amnestics were given to him and he could no longer remember the details of the creature, he could vividly remember the sense of horror and disgust he felt upon laying eyes on it.

This was the moment that planted the seed of disgust and resentment toward The City and its ways into Roland's heart, a thorn that would drive ever deeper inside of him every time he would participate in the seedier, darker aspects of life in The City. It's a sentiment that remains rooted within him even after the Library is ejected, inspiring within him the desire to join Angela in her goal to go up against The Head, the three mega-corporations that act as the "rulers" of The City--to push forward and make an attempt to change The City's rotten core.


Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

This is a somewhat difficult question to answer. Roland has done some terrible things in his life, first in order to survive, then out of intense feelings of grief and wrath. However, even before the events of Library of Ruina, there has always been a part of him that has hated the cruelty, duplicity, and brutality of The City and a desire for a better world.

Having had to confront these feelings as part of the Realizations throughout the story, Roland has come to something of an understanding of his own actions. As such, while he will do what it takes so that he and his loved ones have the best lives they can possibly have, he intends to be aware of the impact his actions will have and to not shy away from that impact. If he believes that it isn't something he can handle carrying with him, he will seek another path.


What quality or qualities do they admire most?

More than anything else, Roland has an admiration for those who are capable of standing tall and sticking to their ideals no matter the consequence or hardship involved. He may not agree with said ideals and will actively work against them himself if he believes they will do more harm than good, but as someone who has caved in to pressure and fell into apathy, he feels that that sort of determination is worthy of respect.


Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Interestingly enough, it's one of his greatest assets. Roland is capable of getting down and dirty and doing what he must if it means he and his loved ones can survive or have a better life somewhere down the line. He knows that means others may be hurt or suffer in the process and tends to carry the guilt for his actions deep inside afterward.

While he has no intentions of rolling over and dying, he'd like to have the sort of life that doesn't require him to do those sorts of things, or, failing that, would like to find a happy medium that doesn't bring about undue suffering for either side.


What is their sign, and why? I feel Roland best settles into The Lovers. Throughout the game, his devotion to Angelica's memory and anger at himself for failing her and contributing to the society that eventually led to her demise fueled his every action, and even before her death he was willing to do some terrible things in order to secure a better future for his family.

Even after moving past his regrets and fixing his eyes forward on the future, Roland remains a man defined by his loyalty, willing, even, to fight for seven straight days in order to protect Angela, whom he has come to respect and consider a close friend after his time getting to know her in the Library.
